On 28 January 2026, the Zoran Djindjic Foundation organised a panel discussion marking 25 years since the formation of the first democratically elected Government of the Republic of Serbia, led by Dr Zoran Djindjic.
The panel was opened by Prof. Dr Ivan Vujačić, President of the Board of the Dr Zoran Djindjic Foundation, who emphasised the importance of the reform legacy of the first democratic government and its continued relevance in today’s social and political context.
The discussion focused on the political, economic, and social reforms initiated by the government at the time, as well as on the vision of Serbia’s modernisation and the significance of this legacy in contemporary Serbian political life.
Former associates and ministers in the Government of Dr Zoran Djindjic shared their experiences and personal insights: Aleksandar Vlahović, Minister of Economy and Privatisation; Prof. Dr Goran Pitić, Minister for International Economic Relations; Prof. Dr Gordana Matković, Minister for Social Affairs; Dr Slobodan Milosavljević, Minister for Trade, Tourism, and Services; and Božidar Đelić, Minister of Finance.
The particular importance of this government lay in its vision of societal modernisation, grounded in knowledge, responsibility, European values, and personal initiative. Djindjic’s policy was oriented towards accelerated change, based on the belief that Serbia did not have the time for gradual or half-measures.
Although its mandate was short and marked by strong resistance, the Government of Dr Zoran Djindjic left a lasting political and reform legacy that continues to serve as a key reference point in debates on development, democratisation, and Serbia’s European future.
